First I want to say Happy Memorial Day to all our Veterans past and present and their families. As the image states “All Gave Some…Some Gave All.” Sometimes we as Americans get caught up in the holiday and having time off from work that we forget the reason behind the holiday and why we even have it. I remember growing up watching old WWII War movies with my Dad on Sunday afternoon’s. My Dad was a WWII Vet and just loved watching the old John Wayne movies. He used to remark that how funny it seemed to be watching movies about history that he lived. My Dad passed back in 2012 (93) just a few days after my 60th birthday and I think I miss most those Sunday afternoons watching those old movies together. So the next time your enjoy some of your freedoms that most of us take for granted remember this; “It is the Soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the Soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the Soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag.” I leave you with this, the next time you come across a man or woman in uniform, make a point to stop and thank them for giving there lives in service to you.
