Blogging Tips: How to Start Your Blog.
I don’t typically do a technical post on how to’s, but I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately on how to start your blog. So for one of my blogging tips today we are going to talk about the basics of how to start your blog.
Setting up your blog is pretty easy if you take it step by step. Most people have the biggest challenge with their blog content after they have everything setup.
I will tell you this if you are really techy challenged and it would stress you out to learn this and do it yourself then DON’T! If on the other hand you are a bit technical and enjoy doing this kind of thing then I believe this will help.
There are so many places out there that will set up your blog and get you started for very little cost. Here are two that I know of.
Okay, let’s get started.
How To Start Your Blog From Scratch
1. Blogging Platform
Personally I recommend WordPress for a number of different reasons here are the 2 main ones.
1. It’s the most popular and has a plethora of plugins (there’s my 50 cent word for the day).
2. It can be self-hosted which is very important and I will explain later in the post.
Because I use WordPress that is the platform I’m going to talk about today.
There are two ways you can set up you WordPress blog. First you can register at WordPress.com and host your blog there. If you chose this method then you will end up with a blog URL of http://username.wordpress.com.
Also if you host with WordPress then they basically own your website. You won’t have a unique domain name like rondeering.com. This is not my recommended method of hosting your blog.
The other option is to have a self-hosted blog using WordPress as the program for the blog. You do this by either downloading the WordPress install files at WordPress.org or you can install them using an install program that comes with most hosting accounts.
Having your own domain is the most powerful way to brand yourself or your product. I chose to brand myself and bought rondeering.com for my domain.
I purchased that domain through GoDaddy for about $10 for a year.
Once you purchase your hosting described in step #3 you will have to point your domain’s DNS address to the proper ones so that it points to your new WordPress installation on that domain.
I use HostGator as my hosting company. Their monthly fees are very reasonable and I have had great support from them.
With your account at HostGator you get a cpanel back-office that allows you to install WordPress Automatically.
You will also need to add an “Addon Domain” under the domains section of the cpanel.
You will create a domain addon using the name of the domain you purchased in step #2.
By clicking on the “Get Started With WordPress Today” icon, you start the process of installing WordPress on your site.
You will be taking to a screen that will need you to select your domain to install WordPress on and some other Questions.
You will need to fill in your email address, Blog Title, Admin username, Your First Name, and Your Last Name.
All you have to do next is click on the “Install Now!” button at the bottom of the page.
Once your website has been created you will have all the information you need to login and start creating a post.
Your main site will be the domain that you installed WordPress on and the admin site will be your domain/wp-admin.
When you login to your admin area with the username and password that was created during installation you will be able to click on “Posts” and start writing your very first post.
There are a number of things that you can do with your blog once you get it up and running, but that would be a whole series on all the technical aspect of your blog.
At this point, your new WordPress website should be up and running. The next step is to start with adding your blog content as consistently as possible.
