The Hunter vs. The Hunted: Why Chasing Customers Is Killing Your Business

July 11, 20262 min read

Every marketer falls into one of two camps: the hunter or the hunted.

The hunter chases. Cold calls, cold DMs, cold emails. Chasing likes, chasing follows, chasing "yes." It's exhausting, and worse, it puts you in a weak position before the conversation even starts. When you're hunting someone, you need something from them. They can feel that. And most people run from anyone who needs something from them.

The hunter is always chasing the next "yes."

The hunted is different. The hunted doesn't chase anybody. The hunted builds something so valuable, so clear, and so useful that people come looking for them. Think about a lighthouse. It never runs after ships. It just stands there, shining, and the ships find their own way to it, no matter how rough the water gets. That's the position you want to be in.

The hunted doesn't chase. It stands firm, shines, and people find their way in.

Here's why being hunted wins every time. When someone finds you instead of you finding them, they've already decided you're worth their time. They come in curious, not skeptical. They come in ready to listen, not ready to defend themselves against a pitch. That one shift changes the entire conversation. You're not selling anymore. You're just answering questions from people who already want what you have.

Being hunted also scales in a way hunting never can. A hunter can only chase one prospect at a time, and every "no" costs energy and time. Something built to attract, like a piece of content, a lead magnet, or a funnel, keeps working while you sleep. It brings people to you around the clock, without you lifting a finger for each one. That's the real difference between a business that grinds and a business that grows.

So how do you become the hunted? Start by giving something away that actually helps people, before you ever ask for a sale. Share what you know. Solve a small problem for free. Build a simple funnel that leads people from "here's something useful" to "here's how I can help you further." Do that consistently, and you stop chasing customers. They start chasing you.

Next time you feel like you're chasing a customer, stop. Ask yourself what you could build instead that would make them come to you. That's the whole game.
